Here’s to wellness

For the past year or so, a group of 20-25 community volunteers in New Richmond, Wis. has been working on a grassroots effort to improve the health and wellness of all people in the community. Our efforts are about to pay off as we gear up for our official launch.

Our effort is called the Vitality Initiative (patterned after the national “Let’s Move” campaign, “Blue Zones” and more). The grassroots group members have witnessed a movement toward better health in various parts of our county and wanted to be part of that movement. Group members come from wide ranging parts of the community. Partners include Westfields Hospital, New Richmond School District, churches, New Richmond Area Centre, New Richmond Community Foundation, local businesses, St. Croix County Public Health, local grocery stores, local restaurants, service organizations, fitness groups and more.

We hope to expand our list of partners, and also hope that the community will jump on board and strive to participate in our activities, and the events we promote, so that New Richmond becomes a community that is filled with vitality.

New Richmond, Wis. has a great history of community leadership and we have always strived to be at the forefront of any efforts that promote health, wellness and community building.

Our initiative will be a year-long effort designed to reduce childhood obesity, instill healthy habits in everyone and make New Richmond one of the healthiest places in the nation. While it’s initially a year-long effort, the project will hopefully live on and grow for years to come.

The major kick-off event for the Vitality Initiative is set for Sept. 24, 2011 in the morning. Until that time, we will be getting to word out about our initiative and what you can do to participate. One of our first forays into the effort is our Vitality blog, which will include posts about upcoming events and tips about how to stay healthy and how to live a life filled with vitality.

We are also on Facebook, under the heading of Vitality Initiative. Please “Like” us so that we can grow our follower base.

A website and more is being planned. Stay turned.

Also, if you have suggestions, please let us know.
